Home About
Who are you?
MyLamb.com is a community of sheep people. We are here to help each other out and
exchange information.
Who runs the site?
Well just me.
So if there is something you don't like or that doesn't work, please be let me know. I'll
try to fix it as soon as I can.
Aside from programming, our family also has a small flock of whether dams and a couple
of rams. We sell a few, show a few and eat a few each year.
We're not sheep experts, but by making the site free and accessible I hope we
can draw in many experts in many areas.
So in a nutshell, I provide the technology and pay for the web space, you provide the
questions and the advertisers provide the answers.
What a great community we have here.
Rules of conduct
[More on this later, but for now play nice!.]
Where's the buck?
Free stuff on the WEB makes me nervous. I'm just suspicious that way. But,
there is no hidden agenda here.
This is by no means a profit deal!
I'm covering all the costs out of pocket.
However, I did set up a simple way for you to help pay for the site. Located on the
home page is a search box for Amazon.com. If, when you buy things from them, you use that
box to jump to their site - MyLamb.com receives a small commission. You won't pay any extra
or anything.
So, I'm not asking for anything, except to use the link on the Home page rather than typing
www.amazon.com in your browser.
How can I help?
I am really glad you asked. Building and maintaining a site this big is a lot of work.
I don't have time to answer many sheep related questions. (Isn't that weird? I started
this thing to get involved and now I can only watch. Oh Well.)
Here's some ideas
- Tell your friends.
- List your events. (coming soon) Event listing here is free. The more events listed
the more people will visit. The more visits the more events get listed.
- Tell your breeder that they can get free advertising by participating
- Become a moderator. A moderator is someone that watches a topic and helps keep the
free exchange of information free and pleasant.
- Become a tester. I'm always changing the web site and need people to try new versions.
- Stay Active. The best thing you can do is get involved and stay involved.
Why have a logon?
There is nothing safe on the Internet. I wish there was. The best I can do
is only allow people to post messages and get to the chatroom if they
have a consistent logon ID and email address. Then if someone comes in to
cause trouble we can block their userID.
This isn't going to prevent problems but it does go along way in preventing abuse
of the services.
MyLamb.com is not going to sell, share, or distribute your email address. I just don't
like sharing my address and I'm not going to share yours.
However, people do like to get in touch. So, we will provide a forwarding service.
A forwarding service allows you
to be contacted by other members without anyone knowing your address. IF you
wish to respond and share your address with someone else - fine.
If you don't, ignore the message - don't respond. Once you respond the other party will
have your address. If you receive any harassments, contact me - the other party will
be banned from the site.
This forwarding service is a great way to stay anonymous and still make new friends
on the WEB.
Can I advertise?
Yes!
Here's how. You submit to me an article that is appropriate for our members. You
can send in pictures of lambs, tack, even yourself! If I like it and it gets published
I'll run an ad for you right here on the site for one year.
What's that? You don't want to write an article? OK, then here's the other method.
You email me your ad banner and a commitment to help answer questions on the messages
forum and I'll run your ad banner. More than fair.
What if I don't have a WEB site already?
For a little while I should be able to host your web site right here. I'm sorry I don't
have the time to make you one from scratch, but if you send me a reasonable amount of pictures
and HTML, I'll put your stuff right here and give you a link.
The cost? Hmmmm how about one more article or you sign up as a moderator? Sound fair?
Why start another WEB Site?
It started out as a "gee this is fun" project.
And like most programming projects - it got out of hand <grin>.
The more I built the more fun I had. However, the deep rooted
reason is that I was looking for a place that was safe for my
kids to roam around. It's not that the other sites are bad or
anything. It's just that I was looking for something that
focused on the kids and not breeders or advertising. Also I wanted them to be able to
email people without sharing an address.
What technology do you use?
- MyLamb.com is hosted at communitec.com on Sun Microsystem's hardware.
- All data is kept in a MySQL database.
- The server-side programming is done in PHP.
- I don't use any applets and keep the graphics to a minimum, for speed.
- The WWW search engine link on the home page is from Google. This has got to be
the best search engine out there right now. Fast and complete.
So stay in touch, visit often, let's be friends.
